When we think of yoga mats, we tend to think of a rubberized surface that you can roll up, tuck under your arm, and head to a yoga class with. It’s simple, it’s portable, and it gets the job done. However it seems that some people have decided that the humble yoga mat could do with a tech upgrade, which has resulted in the SmartMat.
The SmartMat is essentially a yoga mat that will communicate with your mobile device via Bluetooth. From there it will be able to recognize that you are practicing yoga and will also be able to offer the user real time feedback as well as personalized instructions. This is done through sensors that have been embedded into the mat and will be able to guide users through audio and visual cues.
According to its creators, the SmartMat is built around the same thickness to existing yoga mats, which means that rolling it up and taking it with you while you travel is still a possibility. There will also be a SmartMat Marketplace in which users will be able to access and download different yoga classes/guides that they wish to follow.
This isn’t the first smart yoga mat we’ve heard of, but if this is of interest to you, the SmartMat is currently an Indiegogo project that has managed to blow past its funding goal of $110,000 in 24 hours. With 29 days to go at this time of writing, we can only imagine that it will be able to raise even more money. If you’d like to learn more or pledge your support, head on over to its Indiegogo page for the details.
