Despite being updated a number of times in the past few years, the stock Android calendar app has remained pretty stagnant, but Google is changing that with the brand new version of Google Calendar. The updated app comes pre-installed on Android 5.0 Lollipop devices today and will land in Google Play for Android versions 4.1 and above in the coming weeks.
According to a blog post on official Gmail blog, the search giant wanted to make it more helpful and easier to use, because we all know how much pain it is to maintain a proper calendar when you have to enter everything manually.
With the new version of Google Calendar for Android, event-related emails in your Gmail account will now automatically get an entry in the Calendar.
“Every time you book a flight, buy concert tickets, or make a hotel reservation, odds are you get an email with dates, times and other important details. But who has the time (or patience) to copy and paste all this into their calendar? In the new Calendar app these kinds of emails become events automatically, complete with things like flight numbers and check-in times. They’ll even stay updated in real time if your flight’s delayed, or you receive another email update,” Google explained in the blog post.
Even when you have to enter event details manually, the updated app will give you relevant suggestions to make the calendar entry swift. Google is calling these suggestions – Assists
“With Assists, Calendar can suggest titles, people and places as you type, as well as adapt to your preferences over time. For example, if you often go running with Peter in Central Park, Calendar can quickly suggest that entire event when you type r-u-n,” noted Google.
This is not all, Google is adding a new schedule view to the Calendar app, which given a clean, beautiful and clear view at your calendar schedule, added with photos and maps of the places you’re going, cityscapes of travel destinations, and illustrations of everyday events.
Lastly, the app has been built based on Google’s new Material Design guidelines.
