Canon Telephoto Lens Snapped in Half on Sidelines of NCAA Football Game

Sterling Shepard Lands on Lens

In the second quarter of the football game today between Oklahoma and Kansas State, Oklahoma’s quarterback Trevor Knight threw a fade pass to the corner of the end zone. Receiver Sterling Shepard laid out for the reception and landed just outside the back corner of the end zone.

The problem for Shepard and one unfortunate photographer was that Shepard landed on top of a Canon telephoto lens.

The photographers were packed in this particular corner of the end zone; however, the unfortunate photographer didn’t get his second camera off of the ground as he dove out of Shepard’s way. And, unfortunately, Shepard came down hard on top of this camera and lens, which was attached to a monopod.

In that screen capture, you can see half of what appears to be a either a Canon EF 500mm f/4L or an EF 400mm f/2.8L attached to a Canon 1D X. So, it looks to be at least a $10k collision.

It was a hard hit and Shepard was slow to get up; however, he did manage to get up and walk back to the sidelines on his own power. After half time, he came back out onto the field and appears to be ok and ready to go for the second half of the game.

The photographer’s telephoto lens, unfortunately, will not be ready to go for the second half.
